Real Estate Agent Shooter Gets 55 Year Sentence
Thursday, June 22, 2006 - By Staff Writer, Originator Times

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A District Judge handed down the maximum sentence of a 55-year prison term to a man convicted of killing a real estate agent.  29-year-old Mario Chavez shot 74-year-old Garland Taylor in the back of the head with a handgun equipped with a homemade silencer and then put him in the closet of a house Taylor was attempting to sell.

The The Albuquerque Tribune reports that during the trial, prosecutors said the college-educated Chavez lived a life of lies and lured Taylor to a luxury home he was showing in order to act out a Mafia hit-man fantasy.  Trial witnesses said Chavez falsely depicted himself as a wealthy executive with a lavish lifestyle.   Chavez also claimed he was connected to organized crime.

Chavez was convicted of first-degree murder, armed robbery and tampering with evidence back in February.  His attorney says they will appeal the case and maintains Taylor was actually shot by one of Chavez' friends.
